A potential to be in the running at next year’s Academy Awards, Burton’s Alice in Wonderland starring People Mag’s Sexiest Man of the Year, Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway, banked an incredible $116.3m domestically; therefore, rightfully owning the #1 spot in this weekend’s box office.

Several movie critics and cop drama fans adored the grittiness of the weekend’s second place winner, Brooklyn’s Finest. Director Antione Fuqua returns to the action-packed genre that gained him acclaim in 2001’s Training Day, the film that starred Denzel Washington where his role garnered him an Academy Award and a major pay increase.

This time around, Ethan Hawke reunites with the director and is accompanied by actors Richard Gere and Don Cheadle to tell the stories of men of the law who deal with the stresses of the streets along with their own personal nagging demons.

While Brooklyn’s Finest had a strong storyline and the actors to pull it off, it nowhere near met Alice in the eyes with its $13.5m opening.

Shutter Island slowly loses steam and drops two places to #3 with $13.3m. Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan continued to bring the “ha ha-s” in Cop Out with $9.1m.

Avatar maintains its top five position with $7.7m. With the recent attention received through the various award ceremonies, Crazy Heart starring the now Academy Award winning Best Actor, Jeff Bridges is the only film in the box office’s top ten to gain some momentum, raking in $3.3m.

But the main multimillion-dollar question is still dangling in front of them: Will they win the ultimate prize?

Will they soon be introduced on talk shows as Academy Award winners or as Oscar nominees?

Sandra Bullock who has been often looked over for awards in the past unless you count Teen Choice Awards and MTV-related honors is finally receiving her just attention in her award winning role from The Blind Side.

Bullock portrays Leigh Anne Tuohy, a woman who took in a homeless teenager, who after her care went on to get picked up by the NFL.

Unlike some of the other actresses with whom she is competing against, Bullock has received acclaim for taking part in both dramatic and comedic genres and has done so on what seems effortlessly.

And then there’s Mo’Nique Hicks. More commonly known for her reign as the Queen of Comedy, a title she shared with comediennes Sommore, Adele Givens and Miss Laura Hayes, she has taken a bold leap from bringing the laughs to evoking emotions from audiences that she had never done before.

Mo’Nique whose role as Mary Jones, a hateful and cruel mother who lowered the spirit of her daughter, Precious via various forms of abuse, caught the golden attention of director Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey.

Unfortunately even with a Golden Globe and a SAG win added to her acting resume, her decision to not shave her legs and her willingness to be part of an open relationship with her husband has become more of a discussion than her historic win.

As convincing as her role was in Precious, was it Oscar worthy? Was her acting more convincing than her competition? In one word, yes.

Besides taking on the real-life role as the first African American woman to host a late night talk show, which is historic in itself, Mo’Nique showed incredible range, something the funny woman has only done in small theatrical increments prior to Precious.

Yes, she made me mad as hell and then moments later, I felt sorry for her. A talent that she undoubtedly nurtured and cultivated through her past experiences.

A talent that lit her way to become a potential Academy Award winner.

Both women, phenomenal at what they do, captured a spot in the hearts of all who witnessed their cinematic magic and I couldn’t imagine Hollywood’s highest honor being awarded to anyone else.

We will see come Sunday, March 7th if “Oscar” will be the new man in their lives.

But I’m sure their husbands have nothing to worry about either way.

Often standing on the sidelines, ESPN journalist Erin Andrews will now be the center attention but does she have the moves to keep her in the spotlight?

World figure skating champion, Evan Lysacek could easily dance circles around the other stars. But, will he have the same rhythm on the floor that he has on the ice? If so, he could be placing a mirror ball next to his Olympic gold medals.

From one ABC series to another, The Bachelor’s Jake Pavelka made women around the country swoon and if he’s smart, he’ll know to use those same Texan charms to carry him throughout the competition.

Whether you love Kate Gosselin or absolutely loathe her (my guess is the latter), the mother/author knows how to extend her 15 minutes of reality show fame.

With a flower in her hair as her signature accessory, actress and host of Clean House Niecy Nash will undoubtedly wipe the floor with her competition and look pretty doing it at the same time.

Pussycat Dolls lead singer, Nicole Scherzinger knows a thing or two about shaking what her momma gave her but will she have enough to win the hearts or tighten the pants of men around the country?

One of the most well-known exports from Canada, the blonde bombshell, Pamela Anderson appearing on Dancing with the Stars will pique the interest and hormones of the 16-34 male demographic and have many of them praying to her Baywatch poster and Playboy pictorial that in one unskilled spin, she will bless viewers at home with a wardrobe malfunction.

Beverly Hills 90210 alum, Shannen Doherty resurfaces on the scene but let’s hope her past bad girl ways don’t make an appearance. But, then again, that could make for an interesting moment with the judges.

Host Tom Bergeron will return as host but will be share his hosting duties with season eight contestant Melissa Rycroft.

Dancing with the Stars season 10 premieres Monday, March 22 on ABC.

True, Meeting Your Half-Orange may appear to be an unusual title but it was interesting enough that it made me crack open the book to find out the deeper meaning behind its citrusy cover.

Although the book’s subtitle, “an utterly upbeat guide on using dating optimism to find your perfect match” clarified it for me, it just made it even that more intriguing and an instant page-turner.

An easy-to-follow dating manual for the new millenium, Spencer speaks in a motivating and thankfully not preachy manner to her readers about how to utilize dating optimism to not search far and wide for love but to let love find you. She also recounts own personal experiences while surfing through the dating pool and how prior to finding her own “half-orange,” she realized that once she changed her dating outlook and became more optimistic, she was approached by more guys.

Men can sense when they’re dealing with a woman who knows what she wants and is confident she’ll get it. That energy is really attractive. So even though I wasn’t going out on more dates, necessarily, I was meeting more men who seemed interested in getting to know me more. It was awesome. That’s what optimism does—it’s contagious and makes other people want to be around you, which is exactly what you want when you’re single.

When asked why she titled her book, Meeting Your Half-Orange, she explained that it was based on the Spanish phrase, mi media naranja, which translates to “my half-orange.”

I learned it from my husband’s family who lives in Argentina, and I think that’s such a perfect way to explain what we all want: another half-orange so we can create a full, healthy, sweet relationship together.

As with most singles who have had to experience the highs and lows of dating (especially the lows), Spencer recalls the very moment that prompted her to alter her philosophy on dating.

I had a final straw moment, yeah. It was during a date I was having with a guy one night—the first nice dinner and conversation I’d had on a date in months. Just as I was really starting to like him, he admitted that his friend thought he was a “sociopath,” and then ended up displaying a little sociopathic behavior when he walked me home and I didn’t invite him upstairs. He just stormed off as if the whole date had been a waste of time.

She continues.

That night, I wanted to roll up in a ball and never date again! And that’s when I realized that all my dating was wearing me down and bumming me out, and I wanted to feel happy and hopeful again. That’s when I became a dating optimist, determined to end up in a great relationship and live up my life in the meantime. And that led to me meeting my husband eight months later.

Don’t cha just love happy and optimistic endings?

Spencer also believes that regardless of how terrible a date may be going, one should not throw optimism out the window.

Optimism is simply a belief that your love life will work out. That’s the basis of the whole thing. And if you don’t believe your love life will ever work out, why bother looking for it, right? So if you’re going to throw anything out the window, you can give up your positivity for a bit: Groan about how hilariously awful a date is going and then go home and punch the pillow cushions. But don’t ever throw our your belief that there is another half out there for you and you can have the happy, healthy, amazingly awesome relationship you want.

Very well said.

Spencer, who is also a talented prolific writer, has interviewed many of Hollywood’s elite so I couldn’t fight the urge to ask which celebrity she thought was a dating optimist. And I must admit, I was not surprised at her response.

I’d say Ginnifer Goodwin—the actress who starred in He’s Just Not That Into You. I interviewed her last year for the cover of Page Six magazine, and she talked a lot about how much she believed in love. She had recently broken up with her boyfriend Chris Klein, but was grateful to him and their relationship for teaching her new things about herself and life. And she wasn’t stressing about being single, because she saw it as a time to get to know herself and hang out with girlfriends—and she said she wouldn’t settle for a relationship that wasn’t hitting the right notes and making her feel the way she wanted. That healthy, happy attitude about love and life are right on, so Ginnifer gets my vote for being a dating optimist.

Never a dull moment, Meeting Your Half-Orange by Amy Spencer is charismatically entertaining. It’s a fun read for those who wishes to be paired with their special and equal half but may be losing a positive and more optimistic outlook on the dating scene.

After all, she is married so she must know what she’s talking about, right?

Weekend newcomers, Cop Out and The Crazies debuted in second and third with $18.6m and $16.5m, respectively.

Although it is no longer reigning at #1, the award-winning sci-fi, Avatar has slowed down but is still breaking records, becoming the only film to bank over $700m domestically. I wonder what impact next weekend’s Academy Awards will have on Avatar and the other nominees.

Percy Jackson rounds out the top five while the holiday-themed film, Valentine’s Day drops to #6 with $9.5m. Channing Tatum and rising star Amanda Seyfried brings in a solid $5m with Dear John.

Not becoming the successful film that many had anticipated (maybe it was bad timing), The Wolfman came in at #8 with slightly over $4m.

Dwayne Johnson tiptoeing in a tutu apparently is still appealing to some. The Tooth Fairy generated $3.4m while Crazy Heart finished at #10 with $2.5m.

Alice in Wonderland
Similar to Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, whenever you put Tim Burton and Johnny Depp together for a feature film, it’s gonna be a winner. In this retelling of a childhood classic, Alice (played by Mia Wasikowska) reunites her weird and magical friends and discovers that she must end the Red Queen’s nightmare reign. The imagery is beautiful and Depp’s role as the Mad Hatter should fit nicely within his resume of whimsical and animated characters. A definite box office topper in the waiting.

Brooklyn’s Finest
Director Antoine Fuqua returns to his specialty of creating cop dramas with Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke and Wesley Snipes crowding the leading male spot. If this filled to the rim action film is anything like his other flick, Training Day, this will be one to add to the DVD collection.

MARCH 12, 2010

Green Zone
Actor Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass reunite after their successful Bourne franchise to do a war film about a US Army officer who goes rogue as he goes on a search for weapons of mass destruction. If the last administration couldn’t get it done in eight years, maybe Matt Damon can pull it off in two hours.

Remember Me
While Twilight fans await the third installment, they can feast their pupils on the lean Robert Pattinson in this tale of two lovers who both are determined to see the silver lining despite their dark and cloudy past. Note: Bring tissues just in case.

Our Family Wedding
I haven’t seen Forest Whitaker take on too many comedic roles (has he ever done one?) but with this interesting plot, I’m not gonna miss this one starring the Academy Award winner. His first of two movies he will appear in this MONTH, Whitaker is the father of a young man (played by the chocolatey Lance Gross) who is engaged to marry a young woman who has happens to be Hispanic (Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera). But first Whitaker’s character must deal with the drama of his son’s future father-in-law played by comedian Carlos Mencia. Enter features by Regina King, Charles Murphy and Taye Diggs and this will sure to be one of best films of the spring season.

MARCH 19, 2010

The Bounty Hunter
Are they or aren’t they? Well, united on the silver screen, the queen of romantic comedies, Jennifer Aniston and her maybe beau, Gerard Butler star as an ex-married couple who Butler, a bounty hunter has to capture Aniston who plays a reporter. Once captured, the two are both then suddenly on the run from some bad guys who are chasing them. This film really could be a hit or a miss but for now, I’m saying a hit. For now.

The Runaways
In attempts to show the world that she is more than just Belle from the Twilight series, Kristin Stewart portrays and bears a strong resemblance to legendary rocker Joan Jett. She shares the star power with the now very grown up Dakota Fanning (who was also in New Moon with Stewart) as she takes on the role of Jett’s best friend and former bandmate, Cherie Currie.

Repo Men
Forest Whitaker returns a week later in theaters but this time with the nanny-loving actor Jude Law. The two join forces in this futuristic film about repo men who confiscate body parts if a payment is over due. Everything is all fun and games until one of them is being chased for his unpaid for heart.

MARCH 26, 2010

How to Train Your Dragon
Jay Baruchel and Gerard Butler (again) lend their voices to this book come to life film about a young viking who must come into his manhood by subduing a dragon only to befriend him instead. Very cute family-friendly movie.

Chloe
As controversial as it was, the Vanity Fair cover of the ‘New Hollywood’ was right on the money when it came down to Amanda Seyfried. First, it was Jennifer’s Body, then it was Dear John and now she appears as the title character alongside Julianne Moore and Liam Neeson in this story about a doctor who hires an escort to make the moves on her husband but the “business transaction” doesn’t go as planned. And fellas, there’s some girl-on-girl action if you’re interested.

Almost inevitable.

Even in the most civilized places (or so you think), they’re taking place and taking center stage.

If you’re lucky, you can see one right outside your home. Make an event out of it even by sliding a chair to the window and sipping on your favorite drink (alcoholic or otherwise) and enjoy the festivities.

I’m speaking of none other than the public spat.

And it’s astonishing how you can see what seems like a loving couple transform after one simple action or mistaken statement can make a 180 and spring off a fight with more rounds than a Mayweather bout.

(By fight, I mean a verbal one but by all means, is still just as intense as a physical one.)

An all out in the open disagreement usually follows the same argumentative template: woman spews verbal anger, man scans perimeter and woman continues to express her frustration. The man then normally takes one of two paths: he can either walk away with the intent to discuss the matter later or he goes head to head with his woman to prove to himself, her and the now attentive standbys that he indeed wears the pants in the relationship, although it looks uncertain at that moment.

In a verbal smackdown, who wins?

Is it the one who’s the loudest the one with the advantage? Or how about the one who can point out the most supporting evidence to why the defendant should be sent to a relationship bootcamp?

Truth be told, no one wins.

While it is unhealthy to hold onto anger for your personal well-being, it is just as damaging to the relationship.

Conflict by small increments is needed in a relationship because it signifies growth, both as a couple as well as on an individual level.

But, by arguing in public, not only can it be embarassing but it encourages participation from your audience even if they are not talking directly to you.

Simply by others cosigning each time either party makes a comment that they agree with or for instance, if the woman appears to be “winning,” other women give her an audible thumbs up and knocks the man’s ego down a smidget and further fuel the flames.

While this may seem one-sided, men are not the innocent victim in this.

However, many public spectacles that I have personally witnessed featured the female as being the louder and more emotional of the two but that’s because we are the emotionally-driven sex.

I, too have been the victimizer on a few occasions but when I came to the realization that my private discussion accomplished nothing more than become a free late evening stageplay for onlookers, my disagreements with a significant other remained indoors and away from prying ears.

And our relationship improved because of our commitment to keep our private matters…well, private.

Mall walkers didn’t need to know that my boyfriend’s ex was spreading lies more times than she was spreading her legs (and that was a lot) but it did make for an interesting eavesdropping moment.

A word of advice: Leave any topic that could trigger an argument within the walls of your private abode.

That way, you will be more than likely to solve your problem without outside interference and as a bonus, you will be a lot closer to your room of choice when it comes time for makeup sex.
